Back to Alcatraz ist ein kurzer Animationsfilm, der auf einem der wohl aufsehenerregendsten Gefängnisausbrüche der Geschichte basiert: Drei Männer fliehen Anfang der 1960er Jahre mit viel Geschick von der berüchtigten US-amerikanischen Gefängnisinsel Alcatraz. Doch was ist wohl aus ihnen geworden?
“Back to Alcatraz” is an animated short film based on one of the most spectacular escapes from prison: In the early 1960s, three men escape from the prison island of Alcatraz, with great creativity. But what happened to them afterwards?

Geschmuggeltes Besteck wurde zur Schaufel, Regenmäntel und Klebstoff verwandelten sich in ein Schlauchboot und Kopfattrappen entstanden aus Seife, Baumwolle und Menschenhaar.
Bis heute stellt sich die Frage, was wohl aus den Verbrechern geworden ist. Sind sie in der eisigen Bucht von San Francisco ertrunken – oder war der Ausbruch erfolgreich? Der Kurzfilm Back to Alcatraz greift eben jenen Einfallsreichtum auf, der zum Ausbruch der drei Männer beitrug und beantwortet die Frage nach ihrem Verbleib auf seine ganz eigene Weise.
Smuggled cutlery was transformed into a shovel, raincoats became a dinghy and a fake head was made out of soap, cotton and hair.
What happened to the three criminals who escaped from Alcatraz? To this day, they are still missing. Did they drown in the cold bay of San Francisco - or were they successful? The short film Back to Alcatraz takes up the more than creative escape and finds a unique answer to the question.
Die aufsehenerregende Flucht der drei damaligen Insassen Frank Morris, John Anglin und Clarence Anglin diente nicht nur einmal als Film- oder Serienvorlage. Die Raffinesse der Flucht, die Faszination des Ungeklärten und Clint Eastwood veranlassten auch mich zur Konzeption und Produktion eines Filmes über die Flucht von Alcatraz.
Es sollte ein kurzer Animationsfilm entstehen, der sowohl Fakten als auch Fiktion abbildet - und über die Flucht hinausdenkt. Der fasziniert und Interesse für Geschichte weckt. Der Raum für Fantasie und Theorien lässt – und doch sein ganz eigenes Ende findet. Wie konnten die drei scheinbar sehr kreativen Insassen erfolgreich fliehen - und wo könnten sie heute sein?
Die Produktion des Animationsfilmes umfasste verschiedene typische Schritte einer Produktion - in diesem Fall umgesetzt durch nur eine Person. Vom Treatment, Ablaufplan, einer Mindmap, Moodboards, einer Timeline, einem Storyboard bis zum Animatic und zur finalen Animation. Plus: Eine Menge Recherche zur Geschichte.
The spectacular escape from Alcatraz by Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin: A story already told multiple times. But the finesse, unsolved mystery of their disappearance and Clint Eastwood made me do it as well - in a slightly different way. The goal: Making a short film that covers the creative escape and goes beyond. Making a film that sparks interest in the story and history and leaves room for your own creativity. At the same time, it finds an answer to the question of their disappearence.
The film production contained typical steps of production but was executed by only one person (hi, it’s me). Amongst others, the process included a treatment, a production schedule, mindmaps and mood boards, a timeline and a storyboard, an animatic and of course the actual design and animation. In addition, it required some research on the escape.
Auf Storyboard und Animatic aufbauend entstand der finale 2D-Animationsfilm zum großen Teil in Photoshop. Inspiriert von alten schwarz-weiß Klassikern versprüht der Film einen persönlichen Charme vergangener Zeiten, der durch die handgezeichnete Umsetzung der Frame-by-Frame-Animation und eine einfache Formsprache unterstützt wird. Die Farbe Rot setzt zusätzlich Akzente und kennzeichnet die Protagonisten, welche sich an den realen Vorbildern orientieren.
Im Compositing in After Effects kommen Hintergründe, Figuren und Kameraeffekte zusammen und der Film wird durch moderne, groovige Filmmusik ergänzt, die im Gegensatz zum Stil der Vergangenheit steht und ein modernes, dynamisches und charmantes Gesamtbild schafft. Denn eines muss man ihnen lassen: Kreativ waren sie.
The 2D animation is a frame by frame animation fully hand-drawn in Adobe Photoshop. The look is mainly inspired by old classics and their significant appeal. Thus, basic shapes and a black and white look are used to create high contrasts and portray a story that dates back to the last century. Red is used to highlight details and the protagonists and to convey the feeling of something being wrong. The compositing was done in Adobe After Effects. Background designs, characters and animations were combined with groovy, dynamic and charming music to arouse interest and add a creative and charismatic touch (they were pretty creative, we have to admit).
